Official Press Release

GREAT NEWS - WE WILL STILL BE OPEN

Firstly I would to thank you all the community for the support you have shown to the pool in the last two weeks, without which the Great News from the Local Authority below would not have happened.

When the news of the impending closure became public we also received numerous offers of help and support from members of the public and many of you will have had dealings with Martin Brook, who as a "professional financial problem solver" offered his support. He has already started many initiatives which he will be following up.

Martin Brook : " Having looked at the books of SWIM Torquay I noted that three financial storms were converging to produce what I would term the perfect storm. I outlined to the Mayor last Wednesday my findings and also proposed solutions linking business, community and council as a team. Yesterday I was pleased to present a planned solution incorporating not only financial figures but also the human story from countless people whom value the pool and would be devastated at its closure (schools, individuals, groups et cetera). I'm pleased to say our proposals have been well received and the council has announced that they will once again be supporting SWIM Torquay with a 20 £20,000 grant, for the next 12 months, which we, as always, as very grateful. Over the next week groups, schools and individuals will receive communication as we put into place our strategies that have been discussed. It has been a real pleasure to speak with so many and I am delighted that the immediate catastrophe has been held off. Working together, with simple solutions, is the way forward."

This morning Martin received communication from the council. I quote from the email:

"The Mayor has always been fully supportive of the facility and has agreed to the request of a one off grant of £20,000 being made available to Swim Torquay for the financial year 2011/2012. The grant would be available in amounts of £5,000 for the first 3 quarters and 2 grants of £2,500 for the last quarter as suggested. Applications for the release of this funding should be made as per the previous terms."

Once again my sincere thanks for your assistance at this difficult time.
